Dearborn Implement

I have an IO-157 3-bottom plow I purchased to pull behind my 871. I want to repaint it, but don't know the correct original scheme. Any help out there on this?

ALL DEARBORN IMPLEMENTS and later, after 1954, FORD Implements were painted the FORD M2822 Vermillion (RED) Color Scheme. This lasted from the 8N Tractor in 1947 up thru the Hundred Series Models until 1962 when the Thousand Series Tractors were introduced and the paint scheme was now the FORD Empire Blue and Off-White Colors. DEARBORN was the distributor for Ford Tractors and Implements beginning with the 1947 8N. In 1954, DEARBORN (FoMoCo) was absorbed by FORD and became FT&ID, Ford Tractor & Implement Division. The Dearborn Economy Plow was introduced in 1950 and followed the Moldboard (Prior Model) Plows. The ECONOMY PLOW was a better designed plow. When FT&ID assumed ownership, all implements remained with the same model and part numbers, with only the implement ID tag changing names. The good news is that you can still get some parts for the ECONOMY PLOW. New moldboards, shares, shins, frogs, and landsides are available at a few suppliers. All DEARBORN IMPLEMENTS came with an Owners Assembly & Operating Manual, rolled in a tube and attached to the bundled parts. Dealers would usually assemble the implements. I had a DEARBORN museum at one time with about 17 plows alone. FYI: There is a book on FORD IMPLEMENTS but I dont know if it is still published and it has a list of most implements and model numbers. That and the N-SERIES TRACTOR book have many good photos but some of the data stated in them is incorrect and a lot of crucial info is missing. OEM FORD TRACTOR paint codes are:

M-2888 DARK GREY (9N & 2N ONLY); USED 1939 THRU 1947
M-2822 VERMILLION (8N RED); USED FROM 1947 THRU 1962
M-13243 FORD MEDIUM GREY; USED FROM 1947 THRU 1962

FWIW: ALL black parts were painted FORD SEMI-GLOSS BLACK ENAMEL. Semi-Gloss is not the same as Flat Black.

*CLOSEST MATCH TO OEM ORIGINAL ARE THE TISCO BRANDS. Most all tractor paints sold today are way too orangey for the original red. The TISCO TP-110 IHC RED is the closest red to original Ford Tractor and Dearborn Implements. TISCO paint is supplied by the Van Sickle Paint Co. and is a good Alkyd enamel, medium priced. Others have found one or two others that match closely but are top dollar. I also advise if you are doing a Dearborn or Ford Implement restoration is to keep and reuse all the original hardware. Nuts and bolts that were made then are not the same as they are today. FORD made and used HD HEX HEAD hardware like the 5/8-18 Nuts and Bolt heads that have a 1-1/16 AF (Across Flats) dimension. Also used were the smaller 7/16 fasteners with an 11/16 AF dimension. Both sizes are not made today. The FORD PLOW WRENCH, p/n 9N-17014, issued with each new tractor was designed to use for many of the sizes used on both tractor and implements.

Thanks for the great info. I had heard about the 'orangish' red before. BTW is there any source today for the coulters?

Sorry, OEM coulters & jointers are NLS (No Longer Serviced) meaning, they are no longer manufactured. You have to search auctions, flea markets, and tractor shows usually have a vendors market with used parts to sell and maybe will find some but hard to find solo -they are usually attached to a plow so you'd have to buy the whole thing. In 2020 the farm was sold and I had to move out of eth barn I was renting out as my shop. I sold most of my FORD TRACTORS and equipment and had about 12 sets of coulter. Some guy from Alabama bought most of my stuff. He might have set to part with. Can't find his contact info right now...will look later...

FWIW & FYI: You don't need the coulters to plow with. Many farmers took them off as they clogged up with rocks and roots, jam up, and they'd have to stop and remove them. You do need the rolling landside, the tail wheel, in order to plow with though. Otherwise the plow will want to ride up out of the ground. A complete plow always looks good for show and I always attached an implement when I took my FORDs to shows. My theory is people know what a tractor is and looks like but many, city folk mainly, don't know what a plow, cultivator, disc harrow, etc are and did with farming. People would always come up to me at shows and ask and some old timers would tell me they used one when I was young and plowed our family farm...

That's what I've found also. If you find the contact info, I'd appreciate it. I did a test plowing with it Monday and it worked well. Hopefully painting it today. Have a parade in 10 days and would like to have it attached to the 871 that day.

I appreciate the question that texfordfan asked that resulted in your very complete response including pictures. Thanks.

I have three buzsaws, one is very nearly complete and I seem to recall it being a Dearborn. Don't know if I'll ever get around to restoring it. Few years ago bought a pulley adapter for my TO-30. Sure would like to use it for multiple limbs cut for firewood. Bending with the chainsaw is much work.
