decal removal

I have an old massey ferguson and I would like to paint the hood. My problem is that someone put big 4 inch high plastic or vinyl decals spelling out "Massey Ferguson" on the hood. They are sun-baked on. I was hoping someone out there knows a good way to remove something like this. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I usually use a heat gun and a putty knife. But there are other ways, sand them off, paint remover, soak them with a lacquer rag, small butane torch. It all depends on if you want to save the finish under the emblems.

you can try a heat gun or hair dryer and a plastic scraper, or stop at a local body shop supplier and pick up an eraser wheel. it is a gum rubber wheel about 5 inches in diameter that you chuck into a drill and rub the decal off.

I found heating the backside of the metal part then pealing off the decal by hand in one piece. This allows you to heat things up far more than heating the decal itself.
