Deere 4230 carnage

Bought a 1974 Deere 4230 with fried engine
several weeks ago.Pulled cab,split the
thing etc.Tractor was running a manure pump
when evidently the connecting rod let go in
number one and locked the engine.Pretty
sure the flywheel bolts sheared too as the
ring gear and clutch assembly can be turned
by hand. Will know more when I remove
crank.Going to inspect trans,the two
speed, trans pump etc. While tractor is
apart. No hurry to get it back
together...going to be a fun project.

The engines in those tractors are known to be reliable. It would be interesting to try and determine what caused the problem.

6404 engine did have some issues with the connecting rod bolts coming loose, which could have caused the engine failure. I wonder if this particular engine had been overhauled previously and the connecting rod bolts reused?

Looks like it was O/H at some point. Was
hoping I could save the crank...rod journal
pretty hammered though.

There are 2 others jacks at the clutch housing. Seems very safe to me, with the engine on the way out.
You might be money ahead by installing a 6404 or 6466 from a combine.
