Delayed start after sitting a long time?

1989 Belarus 562. It was last run late summer of '22. So, been sitting a while. The fuel is probably 10yrs old. Had the charger on it for a few hours and was worried about the batteries (6yrs old).

But, it cranked good. But, I cranked and cranked. I stroked the throttle several times in case it was sticking in the pump (this has happened before causing it to race when it did start).

I was getting concerned but eventually it started to smoke a little and then started up. Ran fine after a few moments and I used it for a couple of hours to mow the property.

Does sitting cause fuel to drain back to the tank on these?

Not normally but It can, just pump the pressure up with the hand primer before you try to start.
Did you ever fix it seeing this is an old post.?

No, and its probably gotten worse. Last time I used it was 1-1/2 months ago. Had been sitting at good month. Tried the primer pump but it did not seem to be building up any pressure, etc. No resistance to it at all. I wonder if the problem is bad o rings right there. Took forever to start and sure seemed like no fuel getting to the injector pump. I need to crack into the manuals over the winter. Tractor only gets used a couple hours a year in the summer and can sit for weeks even then.

The hand plunjer of primer pumps of these tractors are not the best quality in the world, often a new 0 ring on the piston solves the problem but if corrosion in the barrel is bad then the 0 ring wont seal and all yo do is pump air. keeping the tank full will prevent fuel back drain.Maybe this helps to diagnose the problem.

not sure where you are with this problem...but in regards to the hand primer pump, if you have no pressure yes the o ring could be bad, the point i want to mention is that if the engine is stopped in a spot where the pump plunger is pressed down, the hand pump plunger will just move and not actually operate the pump to create fuel flow.
you might have to bump the starter to rotate the cam enough for the pump to have movement...after feeling pressure just crack the fuel lines one at a time starting at the lift pump output, ending at the main injector pump to release any air in the system. after that its a normal crack the injector lines to remove air.
be sure to check that all connections are tight once its running to prevent leak down over time.
hope it helps
