Generator has quit on my JD 40T. Replacing it with this alternator. To get the wiring plug in a better position, can I remove the bolts and rotate the back half of the case 180 degrees? Thanks Bert

Yup, just don't pull the two halves apart when doing the rotation or you may get the brushes off the commutator rings.

Yabut......The way I do it is to pull the back half off, put a wire thru the back of the alt and put the brushes back in the holder held in with the wire, put the back back on where i want it, then pull the wire out. I have trouble pulling the back up enough to rotate it without the brushes coming out.

Have you bought the alt yet. They sell them with the wires in 4 positions.

Yes you can just be careful not to pull it apart more then you have to of the brushes will drop down on you and then its no fun getting them back in place unless you know the trick as to how to do it

I dont think you can back the halves apart far enough to rotate them without pulling the brushes off the slip rings, atleast I never have been able to. The through bolt lugs on the rear half hit the mounting boss on the front half until you seperate the housing well past where the brushes will pop out. Push the brushes/springs back in the brush holder and retain them with a straightned paper clip through the hole in the rear housing.
When you look at the alternator, you have the front aluminum housing, the steel stator ring and the aluminum rear housing. Make sure you split the alternator between the front housing and stator ring. If you try to seperate the stator ring from the rear housing, you will destroy the stator.

I know the 10si is available with the plug in different positions, but I got mine at the local salvage yard and couldn't find exactly what I wanted.. Thanks to all for the suggestions. Bert

if the pulley is off just remember to pull the front of the case only, leaving the rotor in the rest of the alternator. if you don't have the pulley off you will have to reset the brushes in the holder and keep them in place with a toothpick or straightened paper clip. it is not really that difficult..napaguy

Thanks NAPA guy, I never thought of removing the pulley so the rotor could stay seated in the rear half to retain the brushes.
