delco exciting trick

i need to test a delco alternator, i have no lamps or such to link terminal 1 to to excite the alternator into charging.

is there anything i can touch it to on the tractor to excite the alternator? jump it anywhere just to see if the alt is good?, then i'll fix something up better if it works.

thanks, david

Jump it to 12V's... I am sure you can Google it ... Nuttin to it test it on the tractor... All it needs is a momentary spike of 12V's once it excites you can remove the jumper it should charge till you shut'er down...

If there's a hole in the back of the housing in the shape of the letter "D", stick a small screwdriver in there about 1/2" or so. The screwdriver must touch the rear housing while you're doing this. This bypasses the regulator and makes it charge max output. If it doesn't charge then, you have a bad alternator (most likely brushes).

sure
like the guys said, just takes a momentary connection.
Had a JD I ran like that for a few months til I rewired it.

Heavy wire off the charge stud to the battery.
#2 spade connected to the charge stud.
#1 spade had a short jumper plugged to it, just hanging there.
Start the tractor.
On the 'everything ok? walkaround',
touch the hanging jumper to the charge stud momentarily.
glance at the voltmeter to verify charge.
all good til I shut it down.

the alt charges great,
touched the 1 to the bat for a sec when running, checked voltage and it was charging.

went ahead and ran the bulb wiring, got it all taped up, works great!

thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!
