Does anybody know about these old air cooled diesels? I have a few diesel engines, and I just can't immagine adequate cooling without a liquid system.

One of the most reliable engines ever built, they do run hotter than a liquid cooled engine. Very economical with fuel. Cooling fins must be kept clean, dont allow oil leaks to be picked up by the cooling fan and be pulled thrugh the cooling fins where dust will cling to it. Also more use is made of the lube oil to remove heat.

I had read that they are extremely fuel efficient which makes sense with European fuel prices. Actually, one of my high school girlfriend's father owned a Deutz dealership in Missouri.

Do they hold extra oil for cooling? My 6.0L F-350 holds 15 quarts. Also, the new ones are liquid cooled. Do you know when they stopped with air cooling?

The early F1M414 water cooled singel cylinder engines (1936-1949) were quite prone to frost damage. When the later F1L514 air-cooled single cylinder diesels came out about 1950 that problem went away and they stuck with air-cooled engines after that. Seemed very popular in Europe and after about 1950 virtually all small German tractors were air-cooled. IH was one of the exceptions as their 2, 3 and 4 cylinder engines were water cooled.

Neighbor bought a new 100-06 back in the 70s. He beat the living h*ll out'a things. The engine was still running good in it when he got rid of it,but the rearend was toast. Everybody who uses them for irrigation around here swears by them.

I have 3 of the Deutz Air and Oil cooled engines in my farming operation, they are good engines. Just keep the trash out of the cylinder fins and the oil coolers.

Couldn't meet the polution standards because they run too cool, is the reason you don't see them anymore I've been told
