diagnos steering problem ?

Have a 9n 1941. I posted earlier on this topic but still have not found problem.

My steering wheel slips if I apply too much torgue too fast. If the tractor is moving at reasonable speed and I'm gentle on the turning torque I apply to turn the wheel, tractor will respond.

Do I just continue to be gentle or do I need to do some work on the steering system. I've looked at the manual, but I just see where the end play in the shaft is adjusted. Have not done that yet. But I don't detect any up and down play in the shaft.

Also Bruces 50 tips say to keep steering gear lubricated with 90 weight gear oil. But I can find no fill plug. The only lubrication access I have found is the zerk fitting at the steering wheel/ shaft at the top of the steering column.

Basically, I don't know what I'm doing, so advice is welcome.

I was looking at the book and I would think that the gears may be worn. If it was mine I would open it up and take a look. You may be in an unsafe situation and need the steering in a hurry. What part of Oregon? I am about an hour west of PDX.

Yes I may need to do that. My problem of course is
time.....i'm trying to get thru the grass season. I
just use it for cutting grass in my pasture.

I'm west of salem. feel free to Send me e mail if
you have more info. You enjoying the spring weather.

I live in Dallas. Should be pretty close.

I had to replace the gears in our 2N because they would jump a tooth. I was astonished at how badly the gears were worn when I took it apart. I'm suprised that they engaged at all.

When you say slip, do you mean that you turn the wheel and the steering arms don't move? When it does this, is there a jerk, or is it smooth?

I'm just outside dallas.

Yes the wheel turns and arms don't move. I'd say it is smooth. But if the tractor is moving and I apply easy constant pressure it turns ok.
