Dies after a short while

1952 Alice Chalmers CA I have removed the carburetor and cleaned it very thoroughly I have cleaned out the fuel tank that is spotless I've got a new fuel filter on it I replaced the points and coil and condenser my problem is it'll start fine but after about 10 minutes of mowing it'll act like it's being choked for fuel and if I pull the choke out it will run a little bit better eventually it will die it will not immediately restart but it will after it sits a while what could be causing this I can't think of anything else that could be doing this oh and also I remove this spark plugs and cleaned all of them it's got a good distributor cap and rotor

You might check the gas cap, to make sure the vent isn't clogged. That can cause a vacuum in the gas tank, and the tractor to die after a few minutes.

The moment it dies pull teh coil wire out of the cap and spin it over and check that you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. If you have that pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in 2 minutes or so

I got it figured out the wix filter it's a steel filter but there must be something defective inside cuz it'll flow fuel when I disconnect it something must be flop and loose cuz it's blocking the flow of fuel when the engine dies I pull that off and fuel is not flowing so that's the issue defective filter

Another place to check/clean is the inlet to the sediment bowl. They can get material in them above the shutoff valve and stop flow when it settles in. If you have a standpipe/screen that sticks up into the tank that is not as likely.

Many do not recommend the common paper inline filters to be used in gravity flow systems. Wix does make a couple with a screen similar to the screen in a sediment bowl.

Gravity flow fuel systems don't work well with an in line fuel filter the sediment bowl is as good as they need

NO I DIDN'T I hate in line filters and always have

Another place to check/clean is the inlet to the sediment bowl. They can get material in them above the shutoff valve and stop flow when it settles in. If you have a standpipe/screen that sticks up into the tank that is not as likely.

In old's defense, I can remember posts where he's said all he had to do to fix a rough running tractor was take the inline filter out and throw it away.

We have one in the H line and it runs fine in all weather under all conditions except first start in the day whether it is cold like winter or cold like summer. Just choke it for a minute and then is fine for the day.

I have several with inline filters and have never had a problem with any of them.

It would be interesting to use a level find out what the drop is between the bottom of the fuel tank to the float seat on a Farmall H compared to this Allis and other configurations as well, maybe throw an 8N in there.

well what I did is cut the filter open I removed the filter element cut it down to just the right size and inserted that into the sediment bowl and it works just fine

the measurement from the fuel fitting on the bottom of the tank to the fuel line intake to the carburetor is two and a half inch drop so I can see how that might cause a problem with an inline filter if you're low on fuel maybe

The problem is heat. They vapor lock.

Make sure your inline filter is for something like a 16hp mower with no fuel pump. Those filters will let gas through but if you get one made for an auto it wont flow as it is set up for pump pressure.
