Diesel Engine Oil

Most diesel engine oil is 15-40. I see Mobile synthetic oil has a 5-30. I have a Mahindra 4530 that I start all winter and would like a 5-30 rather than a 15-40 but I don't see that the synthetics is for diesel engines. The original break-in oil was 5-something and it started at zero temps no problem. Opinions please.

Jim's link shows a very good price. Compared to up here anyways. Check this out from Amazon here in Canada. That comes to about $41 USD

The Rotella T6 at Walmart is about as good a price as you will find. Just pay attention when you shop as they carry both 5w40 and 15w40 and the packages look alike. Not all stores carry the same products. Only 1 store out of 5 in the areas I frequent has the 5w40.

You can also get Mobil Delvac 10w30 from Walmart that is a good diesel oil. And there is also a Delvac 5w30 that is fairly common as many of today’s heavy truck engines use it. I believe Napa stores carry the 5w30.

I use the Rotella 5w40 in my little Kubota and a Cat TLB that are used in all seasons.

you need to read the application numbers on the labels. there is so many oil grades out there.

You can use 15-40 anywhere most of us live, - unless you live in upper Siberia in Putin land. Don't skrimp on oil quality. Look for the best, current diesel spec oil money can buy. Change the oil every 100 hours if you love you tractor.

The price difference isn't as much as I thought ..... but still in favour of the US price being better. The Canadian oil jugs are for 5 litres of oil, the US ones are 3.78 litres (a US gallon). Still cheaper south of the 49th though.

In the winter I use a full synthetic 5W-40 diesel-rated oil, such as Rotella T6, in my Duramax. In the summer I switch to a semi-synthetic 15W-40 like Rotella T5. I'd probably use Rotella T6 year-round, but it's quite a bit more expensive than the semi-synthetics.

Any diesel rated 5w40 or 0w40 will be fine, run it all year if you want. As a 40 year heavy equipment operator I can tell you there is not a large excavating company anywhere that runs anything other then regular 15w40 or some lately running 10w30 diesel oil and most are doing 500 hr oil change intervals. But in colder climates most switch to 5w40 synthetic in the fall. All switch back to 15w40 for summer use do to the extra cost of running synthetics year around.
