Diesel engine won't run

New Holland TV 140, Cummins 8 cyl. motor starts on ether but dies immediately. I can hear the transfer pump running with ignition on, motor not running. 1st filter is a fuel/water separator, new, has fuel running out bottom drain. Next filter I didn't replace yet, a fuel filter also has fuel out the bottom drain. Ran fine when I shut it down last week. There has been times when it idled down by itself but picked back up & ran fine. Did that maybe 3-4 times. 1999 tractor with original injection pump. Ideas?

This is just to clarify, it’s a 6 cylinder!
NH TV140 Why haven’t you changed the 2nd filter, can’t go much further in diagnosing without that being changed unless you can read supply pressure to the pump.

Right, 6 cyl. Was thinking of the truck engine. I thought the 1st filter was the problem because it was cold enough that frozen water might've been a problem. Only a few drops in the old 1st filter. Get the 2nd filter tomorrow.

I always want to say, you need to replace the points, condenser and spark plugs if your diesel won't start.. LOL
Sorry I'm no help. If it starts on either, you definitely have a fuel issue.

AFTER replacing BOTH filters you need to bleed/prime the filters/lines. I’m not familiar with the procedure for your particular tractor but if you skip the bleed/prime step, you will never start the engine.

Fuel running out the bottom of the filters is draining the filters. Have you bled the air out of the system? Do you have fuel flow out the points where the filters and pump get bled.

You don't mention the ambient temperature. If it's a little below 32F I'd suspect water in the fuel. Much colder than that and your fuel could be gelling.

you have to confirm the filters are bleed, which should be easy if you have an electric pump. bleed primary water separator first. thats its job to catch the water which u will see in it. the bleed screw will be at the top. then u bleed the secondary filter . then u start it. and yes with air in the system it will not start, and can cause surging like running out of fuel, as it sounds like is happening.

Franklin TN. Currently 40s and 50s. Probably not gelling.

You need to have fuel running out the top, not the bottom of the filters. This is the beauty of diesels. "The problem is no fuel"
