are there many differences between a 4400 combine and a 4420 combine?
just going by pictures, they look almost the same, except for the decals?
i believe the 4400 was gas, or diesel, was that a option on 4420 also?
which sold the most?
any one have a brochure that list the differences or experience using one or the other?

thanks for your time and help!

The 4420 and also the very last 4400's used a different rotary screen much like the 6620's used. Not alot of differences between the two machines as sales of the small machines were droping fast in favor of the 6620's and bigger. Tom

New for the 4420 -- hydraulic fold unload auger--engine to a 359 cu in--hopper size a little larger--reverser on feeder house-- a hydro transmission..

After I bought my '81 4420 my bil pointed out that the only difference between it and his '79 4400 was decals and a hydraulic auger swing, we both had 23 front tires. My '81 was a 329ci diesel, variable gear drive, no reverser. The 359 engines came later on.

I think I have some literature here with the new 20 series combines- 6620, 7720, 8820... and the 4400. I think the 4420 came a year or two later than the rest.

I have a 1981 brochure that shows the 4420. I think the 20 series came out in 79' so yes 2 years later. It Doesn't show the hydro transmission option. I'd like to know more about that because I thought it was never an option.

I ran a John Deere 4420 for 10 years. The primary difference was the hydraulic swing auger. Maybe the late 4400's had a rotary screen on the radiator so that really would not be a difference. The early 4400's just had a fixed screen on the radiator and that gave overheating problems for some. I am positive the John Deere 4420 was always gear drive with a variable speed belt. Also, I have never seen a feeder house reverser on a 4420. The inside of the cab was painted black on a 4420 rather than the green of the 4400. The covers over the unload augers in the grain hopper were also different. The 4400 primary unload auger had a cover or shield over it supported by little legs in the middle whereas the cover on a 4420 just had more metal to support it with no legs. On my 4420 the cover wanted to sag and rub on the unload auger so I actually replaced it with a 4400 cover. The 4420 was the last of the little combines that was actually a decent machine. Sold the combine 4 years ago with 2200 original hours on it.

I think the feeder house was variable speed with a little hyd cylinder. Also did the 4400 have the dial header hight control?
