Differences between 2N and 9N

Im into the 3 point on this tractor. Ive done 8N, 3000's and 445s, this tractor is completely different inside, only 1 control lever that appears to be draft control. The linkage is a forked arrangement going to a "tree" that activates the piston. The "tree" has been bent up, tough to get it to where it works. Don't have a book or know what model to buy book for. Supposed to be a '48 model, how do I confirm? Is the 3 point linkage the same on both 2n & 9n? thanks

Buy an FO-4 service manual. 48 would be an 8n, not much difference between 9n and 2n. this site sells the manual.

You are describing the control linkage used in the 9N/2N models. Here is the manual you need:

ALL 9N and 2N Models were the same basic tractor with DRAFT CONTROL only, a 3-speed transmission, with some electrical and steering changes made and engine and all others identical. There are numerous books on the Ford N-Series Tractors and their history. You can find all the 9N/2N OEM Manuals and most all of the history of them on the other Ford N-Tractor site for free downloads. All of the 9N & 2N MPC's are posted there too and are great reference tools. The ESSENTIAL MANUALS are the most important tools you can invest in. Read them first beefier you start yanking parts off and doing great damage. The 9N/2N hydraulic system is a bit different than the 8N system and you need to know the differences before you start pulling the top cover off. The 9N/2N system uses a Wishbone bracket linkage that MUST be released thru the side access panels BEFORE you pull the top cover off. You said:, ...Don't have a book or know what model to buy book for. Supposed to be a '48 model, how do I confirm? Is the 3 point linkage the same on both 2n & 9n? thanks.... YES, to your last question. I explained -9N/2N has a 3-SPD & DRAFT CONTROL automatically set. In July, 1947, the 8N was released and went to a 4-SPD and added POSITION CONTROL. With Position Control came a lever under the RH seat to switch from Draft Control to Position Control. There is NO '48 9N/2N. The 2N ceased production at the end of 1946. The 8N had a Control Rod now, no wishbone bracket. The hydraulic cylinder has a cast scallop on the front lip at 7 O'Clock to clear the rod. Much of the other system parts are the same. BOTH cylinders are bolted on to the bottom of the top cover with 4 bolts. You DO NOT REMOVE those until you have the cover off the tractor and onto your bench. As stated, the I&T (now CLYMER) FO-4 Manual has both hydraulic systems and how to repair. If you want more info, email me for my article on 8N Hydraulic Repair.
