Different Axel Nuts

Hello All,
I got a flat in one of my rear tires and had to take wheel off. Decided I was going to replace brakes while it was off. Bought some parts including axel nuts (ordered 4179). When I went to take the axel nut noticed it was a larger inner diameter than the one I ordered on one side the the tractor. The other side matched what I ordered. The odd side appeared to have a threaded sleeve over the axel and then a wider inner diameter nut. Unfortnately means I will have to buy another socket. Any ideas what is going on?
Also discovered axel was leaking oil on brake pads. Can I clean them up or should I replace them? They look like there is still a lot of pad left.
Thanks,
Steve

It sounds like the threads on the axel may be bad, and it need replacing.

There is a band aid for that.

Axle Clamp Lock Nut - Clamp lock nut, rear axle, 1-14". For 8N, NAA, Jubilee. This improved nut helps to prevent premature wear on both axle and hub. (The ring on the original type can fall out or rust out which allows the nut to come loose). This nut stays tight! Replaces CBPN-4179-A and 8N4187. (Part No: LN10-21) $21.98

Steve.........yep, the 2-part squeeze'm rear axle nut 1-7/8". Probably yer HARD axle thread has been damaged by spline hub. It is an acceptable "fix". I have them on both my rear axles and I can't find ennythang wrong with my threads (1.25-18) either. The OEM hex (2") axlenut with safety wire clippie ain't known for keeping its nuts tite.

Remember, tighten yer rear axlenut to an amazing 450ft/lbs. ALL wheels on the ground. I use a 4ft 3/4"drive cheater bar gittz'em tite enuff. Iff'n yer sphincter challenged, rent a 3/4" drive 600ft/lb torque wrench. .......Dell, the unchallenged
