Differential Dipstick Oil Level

I replaced a broken axle in the woods where it broke 5 years ago and did not shim the replacement axle. Five years later it began leaking at the axle seal. I took the opportunity to re-shoe the brakes and of course properly shim and replace the leaking seal.
The oil level since replacing the axle has been lower, see attached pic. (It always was filled to the top line for the previous 60 years of its life.)

One suggestion was to run it lower as I have very hilly property, so leaving it 'below axle level' will be less likely to leak.

Thoughts / Where do others keep theirs?

Running a little low won't hurt.

Helps keep the brakes and clutch dry.

It holds a lot of oil, the pump is in the very bottom, as long as the stick will touch is plenty.
