Differential Lock

I just bought a 1980 Ford 1700 which is running fine and surprisingly after setting for 1 week week has 0 signs of fluid leakage on the cardboard under it. It has what I believe is the differential lock at the back of the right foot platform. If the pedal is pushed down it just stays there. Is this a common problem and is it a difficult fix?

No it does not pop back up. You have to pull it up with your hand. Judging form the wear a previous owner must have either used it a lot or rested his foot on it often.

It is normal for it to not immediately pop up. Usually they come back up after driving a few feet, and it often takes a little turning. On large trucks it often takes 2-3 hundred yards.

The diff locks on those little fords Is just a plate with pegs on it that when you step on the pedal it moves that plate and locks the differential . So if someone steps on that pedal when they are spinning it will bigger them pegs or the holes a little bit and then you get what you?ve got going on

What Showcrop said.

Got 2 5000's and a late 4000. The diff lock pedal may pop right back up, but usually you have to drive a little bit before it comes back up on it's own. Works that way on all 3.

Got a 398 Massey, it stays down until you press the pedal again to release it.

Just the way different manufacturers set them up

Check that the pin where the pedal connects to the clevis is free. Mine got corroded and stuck tight. I had to drill it out to replace it.

Need to check for several things, weak return spring, linkage binding and if the pins are worn they may stick in so you need to back up to release them.Could be as simple as turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction to take the pressure off the mechanism.

Ford 4000 and 5000 step on pedal while spinning and as soon as traction equals the lock releases and you cannot get it to lock again untill one wheel is spinning. And if you want to start turning while spinning tap brake on side you are turning to. Cannot be engauged unless spinning. Now the 3020 I borrowed and tried to take home somehow that lock go engauged on the straight away and when I got to my drive it would not turn, just slid the tires sideways past my drive. put brake on to stop forward travel and backed up and it had released and then I could turn off the road. Don't know why that differential lock got on or why it stayed on with no spinning hapening. One reason out of many I would not have one of those Deeres.
