Our clubs show was this weekend, got to plow with the super 88 diesel. It ran good, black smoked a lot. Bean stubble and corn stalks, 4240 3-14 plow. I tried 3rd, pulled it but never got the motor wide open, dropped back to 2nd and it ran full throttle but pulled down in the tough spots. Another guy had a super 88 gas and Oliver 3 bottom plow running in 3rd. I think it's short on power. Found out had sat since 1999, hopeing it will gain some power after working it some.

So it wasn't your tractor? I'd be checking the entire intake for nests and such since it has been sitting for 25 years and was chugging the black smoke... Surprised the injection pump wasn't stuck.

It's mine now, bought it in February. Injection pump was stuck, sent it to dieseltech and he went thru it, replaced hydraulic pump, brakes were rusted solid, freed them up and new seals and brake discs and replaced the seat rubbers. Starts easy and runs smooth, air cleaner pipe is clear.

I don't know about the Super 88 but some Olivers had different gear ratios - fast and slow. How fast was it pulling in each gear? Faster or slow than the other Oliver Super 88 you noted?
My Oliver 1650 sucks for 6th gear until it gets wound up. I have to start in low torque, gets wound up and shift to high torque. Gets up to about 25 mph according to my sister. She's followed me a 2 or 3 times. Was a Gas Hog. Ran out of gas twice just going 10 miles. 3 gallons wasn't enough, all we had with us.

Almost sounds like you might be one tooth out on timing gear when you reinstalled pump? Maybe double check firing point mark on flywheel to pump timing mark? Also the PSB has a smoke/fuel adjustment screw that you are probably aware of? I used to plow with a 49 88 standard diesel and 3 furrow ace bottom plow in 3rd in tough spots and ran 4th in easier pulling.

The gas version will have more power than a diesel. Look up Nebraska tests 525 & 527, Super 88's gas and diesel. Drawbar pull is about 100lbs of each other, but the gas is using 3rd and the diesel is using 1st gear. Not all plows pull the same, you should have tried his plow to get a fair comparison.

You have a high speed transmission, 5th and 6th are geared faster. My 1550 tops out at 21 mph, the other 1550 goes about 14 mph. Not sure if they high speed tranny in the super series.

I pulled 3 14s with mine, but my uncle bought one new and always pulled 2 16s with it. I had an old guy on the milk route with an 88 gas who pulled 2 16s with that one too.

Mine runs about 12 mph in 5th. First got it, I drove it home. It wouldn't go in 6th gear, so 5th gear all the way home, about 10 miles. Tool forever to get home. Got to playing with it in the field south of the house and something went "PING" and it went in 6th gear. Only a 2 and 1/2-acre field and I felt like it was flying. Had to have the intake/exhaust manifold milled. My brother does all the heavy work - retired mechanic. Drove to town with my sister following. Took less than 1/2 the time for the same 10 miles.

Oh, yeah, heavy in the front with industrial end loader, and rear wide tires, 18.4 X 34, it doesn't take much for the tires to break loose.
Specs give 7,815 pounds for the tractor and with end loader it weighs 10,460 pounds.
I don't farm anymore. I use the 1650 for a bulldozer. My wife calls it my toy.

Chris 3rd is normally what i plow in both with the 88's and Super 88. I don't know if your in clay or what, but , in our heavy ground, the 88's get a work out. The Super has a 1650 engine in it, and just plays with 3-14s
