Disc Harrow parts

I pulled out an older disc harrow last night that came with my 10acres. I'm guessing 8 or 10' wide with heavy angle iron frame. Adjustable tongue, via hand crank. 4 single gangs of discs with 3 bearing/hangers each. All gangs are adjustable by pulling a pin on the outside and sliding forward or back. Seems to be in ok condition except for some bad bearings. However one gang is going to need a new axle as well, are the square axles easy to find? Are they somewhat generic or are they manufacturer specific? I'll try to post pics later.

Whats wrong with the axle? If the blades turned and grooved the axle then just have them welded up and grind them square again.

I have one axle bent and then another axle has been loose for awhile and it has worn the shoulders off for a couple inches. I may try your suggestion though.

Shoup has a lot of disc parts; it you can't identify your disc, you might make something work........based on measurements.

I had new axles made for my 14 ft. wheel disc a few years back at a machine shop. Cost about $90 apiece to make New ones are about the same price maybe a little higher. One of the axles was broke when I bought the disc. By the time I put in both axles and new bearings and a few blades I had a $300 investment but it is the same as new. Most times those axles break because they were not kept tight. The same with the disc blades center wearing is the axle wasn't kept tight. In fact if somebody gives me $300 they can own it.

Without seeing a picture I'd say that the disc is most likely an old IH. If it has cast iron spools on the gang I'd say it's definitely an IH. They were a good old disc if you can keep a hitch on them....
Shoups can get any part you need for that disc. Bearings can also be sourced from any bearing supplier in town.
My suggestion regarding gang bolts is to simply replace them, probably all of them if you plan to use the disc any amount. You can weld them up in a pinch but they generally fail again rather soon, usually about two inches from where they were last welded. If these gang bolts have been welded before, replace them and save yourself a pile of headaches.
If you're replacing the blades, note the gang bolt size. IT will probably be 1-1/8". Also note that most blades today will accomodate two sizes of gang bolt... ie. 1" and 1-1/8" or 1-1/8" and 1-1/4". If you have a 1-1/8" gang bolt, get the blades that will fit the 1" and 1-1/8". The larger ones WILL spin on the gang bolt. BT/DT, got the t-shirt.

Agri supply has a lot of disc parts and their prices are pretty good as well, I am going to redo an old Allis tandem disc this winter. I want to cut it down by 2 feet to use behind my Allis B 6 ft.1 in. is as wide as I can get on my trailer anyway. T.J.
