Wife has asparagus bed aprox 5 years old and only producing sporadically. Have read on here about discing to separate roots and increase plant distribution, good idea or not? Also read about adding salt water. Is there a particular solution, add it straight? Do you use pure salt like livestock salt or is it epson salts? This is in heavy clay soil. would mulching help or hurt? New crop for me and I know nothing about it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Carl

Who told you to put salt on you'r soil, i would be real careful with that, that will make your soil dead, it kills the bacteria in the soil, it wont even grow weeds, do you have a county agent in your county, he or she will have a degree from a college about that very thing ! In the county seat town, of your county Look under USDA Couty Agent !

It is common to say add heavy dose of commercial fertilizer to asparagus to kill off weeds won?t hurt the asparagus.

The real deal is the salt in the fertilizer is hurting the weeds.

Asparagus is somewhat salt tolerant, the question is how much is too much......

Heavy application of 12-12-12 fertilizer twice per year. Early spring and again in the fall. abundant application of common, ordinary table salt will kill grass and weeds but will not harm the asparagus. In fact, I think the asparagus LIKES salt. 5 years is about right for the first harvest, and it will not be a bountiful harvest. It will get better each year.

Thanks Rusty,

I appreciate the insight.

I am always amazed by folks who apparently don't have a clue about a subject; but, feel like they have to respond.
Main reason I seldom post, I just hate all the negative, uninformed responses.
