Discovered Something Good Today

I had to buy a new 5 gallon gas can so I got one of the red plastic ones with the impossible to use "safety for all" cap on it.

I had to put some gas in my tractor today and I saw one of the empty black five gallon hydro fluid jugs from TSC. I looked at the cap on that container and what do you know? It fit perfectly on the red gas can. No more screwing around with that ridiculous cap. I also bought one of those liquid transfer pumps to stick in the five gallon can and fill an old metal one gallon can to pour in the tractor. Those things work great. I think I got them from Sportsmans Guide. They had a sale, two pumps for a good price, so I have two of them.

My jeep cans just became too awkward to use the older I got.

Replace "Safety Third" OMG cap with simple (like me) threaded cap from empty hydraulic oil 5 gal bucket lid.

N'est-ce pas vrai?

Doesn't it have a pour spout...

Yes it has a pour spot as you see in the pic below. But, this thing is a real PIA to remove and replace with that stupid safety ratchet thing on it.

The little black cap makes it a lot easier. As I said, I'm 73 years old and don't like having to lift that five gallon can (40 lbs.) up to pour it in the tractor. I like to fill up my one gallon can for that.

My back is a little tricky so I lift that five gallon can as little as possible. The little transfer pump makes it easy to fill the small can from the big one.

I cannot for the life of me understand how these new "safety" pour spouts are safer. They are WAY more dangerous. Especially on a 5 gallon can. You rest that spout lip on a tank with a full
can, and it stresses the bottom of the spout around the o-ring and gas pours out all over the place.

Not to mention that stupid ratcheting thing. The first thing I did was to bend that thing out so it doesn't catch any more. I don't have any kids to worry about opening it.

I'm hanging onto my 5 gallon steel cans for dear life. I also have a couple "safety cans" that I agree are anything but safe. Even if you modify them ,the replacement nozzles will not take much stress without leaking and you need to add a vent to make it pour easily. Does anyone happen to know where I can find those 2 1/2 inch ring gaskets that belong with the fill caps on the steel cans? Mine became lost and they don't seem to appear on the web. I suppose I can make some out of cork or gasket material.

Check out gasspouts.com. I "retrofitted" all my plastic gas and diesel cans. The vent works perfectly on the thicker plastic! Thin plastic gippo cheap cans, not so much !

Patrick,

I use the plastic gas cans a lot in Alaska for mining pumps, generators, wheelers (you call 'em ATVs and other gasoline uses. Often guys leave empty cans until the next time needed. Sometimes they are left where sunlight hits them in storage. Sunlight will bleach out the color of the cans - followed with them becoming brittle and then cracking.

Do your best to not let 'em do any 'sun bathing'. - Joe -

(quoted from post at 07:51:24 11/19/20) I intend to take all 4 of these (and the N) to the next life

Several of those have vents on the back side - I bought a handful of the vents and installed them in all my newer plastic tanks. No need to replace the "works less" spout.

Have you got a picture of one of those vents Ed? Sounds like a good idea.
