distributor coil connection to cap

tab on bottom of coil that makes contact with stud at top of cap that goes down to rotor, how does this work? Does power travel down this to the rotor? If so, where does it come from?

The coil has 2 circuits, primary and secondary. Primary circuit carries battery voltage through the stud, pig tail, brass screw then to the points. Secondary circuit is from the
stud, to the tab to the cap, rotor and spark plugs. When the points open, you get 24k or so volts in the secondary circuit.

Bruce has it explained. Power is supplied by the battery voltage. Camshaft on engine rotates the distributor. Cam & Weights which also rotates and rotor contact is
made to the coil tab each time as each cylinder is fired. Maybe this will help further clarify function and operation.

IF PIGTAIL CONNECTOR ON COIL DOESN'T MAKE CONATCT WITH THE SPECIAL HEAD BRASS SCREW ON THE CONDENSER WIRE, (SEE 'A' 'B' & 'C') NO CIRCUIT CAN BE MADE.

6V COIL STATIC TEST:

NOTE: TEST DOES NOT CONFIRM COIL IS GOOD. A 6V COIL SHOULD READ ABOUT 1.5 OHMS; FOR A 12V COIL DOUBLE THAT.

What Bruce said.

When the primary circuit/points are closed current flows through the primary coil windings, the 2ndary circuit charges making a magnetic field.

When the points open the 2ndary field collapses, inducing a high voltage in the 2ndary. This is transferred via coil to cap/rotor/plug wire/spark plug.
