Distributor

Hello everyone.
I have a Ford 8N with a side mount distributor.
I am wanting to convert it over to 12 V system.
My question is on the 12 volt conversion kit it does not come with a 12v distributor.
does the distributor need to be switched over to the 12 V system also?
The conversion kit that I see is from Steiners web site.
Thank you

I'm not familiar with your tractor or the conversion kit, but the distributor has nothing to do with 12v. The coil does, needs to be 12v. Keep the distributor that's on the tractor and change the old 6v coil for a 12v coil. Alternatively a 6v coil would work if you put the correct resistor in series with the coil so it drops the voltage to 6v. Plenty has been written about this over the years. Do a search.

The distributor does not need to be changed. The distributor parts (cap, rotor, points, and condenser) are the same 6 or 12 volts. If you reuse the 6-volt coil it will need a ballast resistor in series ahead of the coil. If the coil is being replaced with a 12 volt coil it needs to be one that specifies "No External Resistor Required" (or such).

If it is 6-volt positive ground, you will want to change it to negative ground if installing an alternator. The coil connections will be reversed for where they are for positive ground, as will the wires on the ammeter connections.

PartsASAP (parent company of YT and provider of this site sells parts) as they do through this site. Use the Tractor Parts button at the top of the page to see parts here or go to PartsASAP. Why look at Steiner's for parts, when parts are available here, where you are asking for info on your project.

Thank again I see that now with the parts available on this site.
I have a whole list of parts that I am ordering now.
Very good selectio.
