1949 8n front mount distributor.I removed the distributor from my tractor to adjust the points and timing.I set the points to the recommended.0.015in{actually the were on the money to start with]The breaker points started opening when they should.so I didn't fool with the timing.I have no spark at the plugs.I did not replace the distributor condenser.I used fine emory cloth to clean points,distributor contacts and rotor.then blew it out with air.The book says you cannot get your distributor 180 degrees off.What am I missing?thanks Jay
 
jaymo,Your not telling us why you took the distributor off in the first place.You may not have the coil pigtail in place right,condenser wire touching the housing,copper strip touching or loose.You also need to clean and polish the points with a piece of brown paper bag or a dollar bill.To get the grit and dust off of them.
 
Den N Ms I took the distritor out to adjust the points,as per the manual.I know of only one point the pigtail connection can be made to the coil.Is there something I should know about the connection? I'll try the paper bag as i do not want to waste any 1 dollar bills these days .Would it help if i used a hundred?Thanks Jay
 
Jay, yes using the 100 bill is much better. Use just the tiny corner. Once used, here is my address. Must be disposed of out of state. The book and some folks make the reassembly process sound "impossible to mess up"...Be sure when you put the distrib. back on the front of the engine, that you do it as follows. Just start the two bolts, apply slight pressure to the dist toward the engine and turn the rotor cap till the distrib. tang drops in the slot in the end of the cam. You will KNOW it dropped in right if there is absolutely no space between the base of the dist. and the face of the engine..no crack whatsoever..now tighten the two bolts...180 degrees out of time as the tang TRIES to go in the slot can sometimes fool some folks..If tightened 180 degrees OUT of time the ears can be broken off of the dist. base and/or other damage done to the dist. Many, many distributors have been ruined just like I described.. One other thing, easy test, remove the cork gasket under the coil and reassemble it to the distrib. Fold small piece of paper, card etc to put inder the coil bail so it will hold down tight without the gasket. If it cranks and runs like this, then you know that the springy contact or the other one on the coil was not making contact. If needed, carefully stretch the springy tail and/or bend the other flat contact so they will contact. Reinstall with cork gasket..HTH
 
6v or 12v?

By using a point file, you've considerably reduced the life expectancy of your points. Points have a thin metallic coating on them to help reduce burning & you've removed it. To dress points, use card stock, a clean dollar bill or a brown paper bag. When points cost $3 & I made $1.25 an hour, I filed them. If the tractor stops on me & the points are burned, I'll file them to get it running again & change them out as soon as I can.

In addition to the pigtail, there are a number of likely failure points in a frontmount. Assuming that the bushings & advance weights are ok, the most common electrical failure (no spark, weak spark) points on the frontmount are:

1. The insulator under the concave head screw.

2. The insulator at the end of the points where the copper strip attaches.

3. The copper strip grounded to the plate.

4. The condenser wire grounding.

5. The pigtail/tab not making contact.

6. Incorrect positioning of the spring clip on the plate causing the pigtail to ground.

7. Incorrect seating of the coil on the distributor.

8. Water/moisture inside the cap due to gasket failure or the absence of a gasket.

Means you checked the timing, I'd suspect # 6. But, you need to check all possibilities & use a meter to do it.

I have discovered that 75% of “no spark” problems on frontmounts are as a result of poorly aligned parts or wires & not parts failures. Remember, you are dealing w/ parts made over 50 years ago that have seen a lot of wear & tear. They just don’t fit together like they used to.

First, turn the key on & crank the engine while you look at the ammeter. What is it doing? If it deflects, that means your points are opening & closing. If it shows a constant discharge, or doesn’t move at all, that means you need to do some more checking.

Next, check for voltage at the top of the coil. Battery voltage w/ the points open & about half of that when they are closed. If you do not have voltage to the coil, then move upstream to the resistor then to the ignition switch. As you check each component, wiggle it & the wires attached to it & watch you meter. Resistors break or get shorted & wires corrode.

If the voltage never drops when the engine is cranking, that means the points are not closing or you have lost contact between the pigtail & the brass screw or the tab & the cap.

Next, check for continuity inside the distributor w/ a meter. It is very easy to ground the tip of the condenser wire to the body of the distributor when you replaced the points. Also, make sure the condenser wire does not go through the same opening in the distributor that the coil pig tail does. The condenser wire goes the opening on the top right. Make sure you are using quality parts; the points should have a phenolic rubbing block & not the cheap white plastic crap. Make sure you have the star washers under the screws on the points.

Next, with the distributor still off the tractor, install the coil. Look at the pigtail on the coil; is it touching the brass screw w/ the concave head inside of the distributor? Don’t trust your eyes; test for continuity from the top of the coil to the points. If you do not have continuity, stretch the pigtail a bit until you do. (some people would rather put a small washer under the brass screw) Make sure that the pigtail is not grounded to the clip that holds the distributor plate in place; sometimes you can move the plate while setting the timing & actually ground the pigtail. Your meter should tell you this even if your eyes don’t! Also, look at the little tab opposite of the pigtail; bend it a bit also to insure that it will contact the distributor cap. Another common failure point is the insulator in the tab on the distributor plate where the brass screw w/ the concave head goes; it holds the copper strip from the points. Again, your meter will usually tell you if you have a problem, but you might have to wiggle the copper strip a bit. Once you are sure that you have good continuity inside the distributor, you should be good to go.

At this point, I just put the distributor, coil & cap all back on the tractor as a unit (it helps to loosen the fan belt). The reason I do this is because it is real easy to get the cap or coil mis-aligned trying to put it back together one piece at a time & the result is something gets broken or you get a ‘no spark’ problem.

Thanks Bruce,Den and Tom.I did the tests as you guys recommended and discovered it was that the pigtail was too short or maybe going to ground.So i fixed it. Fired up first time.Going down my road in fourth gear felt like I was in a hot rod 49 ford. Thanks
