What is the purpose of the brown plastic disc the covers points? I know that it keeps out dirt and moisture, but what other purpose does it serve? Just asking

" it keeps out dirt and moisture"

That's the primary purpose.

The secondary purpose is to allow the user to lose the rotor clip when trying to remove it.

Bruce, is it worth adding one if it is missing from my '52 sidemount?
lters height of distributor cap on side mount.

It's not "missing"; they were OEM on the NAA's & just happen to fit the sidemount N's. That being said, I became a believer in them after helping the neighbor work on his 50 sidemonut. The crud inside that cap & on the plate was significant. I use one on my 51 & of course on the 740.

es, it raised cap by nearly a tenth of an inch. I ran one on mine for decades anyway.
