Dogbane in hayfield

I know the topic of dogane has been beaten to death on here but I'm looking for some more information I haven't been able to find. I am new to the hay business. I recently cut about 6 acres of grass hay that I am going to square bale. I noticed some bigger patches of what i believe to be dogbane so I avoided mowing those. But I may have missed a few patches with half a dozen or so in it. My question is it safe to touch the bales with dogbane in it. If I google it they act like it's the most poisonous thing in the world

It fine, most hay fields around here have at least some in it. It really gets bad for second cut. As long as you don't eat it, you're good.

The truth is that it is poisonous, it has bad taste, so is not grazed when live. but can be an issue in hay.

Don't forget that the best defense against weeds is a strong stand of cool weather grasses to crowd them out in the spring. But you will still need to spray it ASAP.

I started getting a little in my fields. It's easy to spot so I'll just walk in a hit it with some glyphosphate in a hand sprayer. Sometimes I can pull it and get the root. Small fields, it shows up easily in the swath so I'll just pick it out and set it aside when I rake. I had one field sprayed for it some years back but it's been scarce ever since. Neighbor had it in his field, his horses don't eat it but his ewes started aborting lambs.

I've found most animals will not eat things like milkweed and dogbane in hat as they will pick around it or spit it back out or our cows would so never worried about it in hay. I do spot spray for it and only ever had spraying work if I could spray it about 3 times. A week or 10 days apart each spraying. Used roundup and 24D mixed on it at the quart rate I believe it was.

We don't have dog bane here but I have eliminated milkweed from plenty of ground by going back and spot spraying with Round-up after first cutting, before it can spread
