Dope for rear end Super A

I am helping my 82 year old Father-in-law try to get his tractor going. I need to know how much dope do you put in the rear end?

Anthony: Never heard tell of dope for a rear end of a tractor. Are you talking about rear end lubrication? That being the case 90w gear oil or heavier, 5 qts in rearend-transmission and 3 pts in each final drive.

Most of the dopes I've run across around tractors were in the seat. That is when some brave soul owner hired the village idiot to operate tractors.

Have not heard it lately but Dope used to be commonly used name for gear lube in South.

Thank you Mr. MacKay, your information was exactly what I was looking for. My father-in-law calls the lubricant "dope" since he is 82 years old, that is the term he was familiar with. I am his daughter-in-law who is just trying to help him. Thank you again.

dope is what i call it for the last 48 years. lady may have to get a book. mine says trans and bevel gear compartment 1 and 1/2 gal. final drive both sides 6 pints. steering gear 1 pint. you may want to drain since water may be in dope. Hope this helps

Dave: You best burn that book, to start with the only figures IH ever quoted in gallons on tractors under 25 hp, were fuel.

Crankcase is 5 qts., Transmission is 5 qts. with belt pulley and 4 qts. without. steering box is 1 qt. air cleaner is 7/8 pt., touch control is 8-1/4 pts with refill being 6-3/4 pts and final drives are 3 pts each. That information is right from IH original operators manual.

Hugh, I ain't burning my book, its the onliest one I got. McCormick Farmall A servicemans manual 1939. I read and reread and thats what it says.

IH reduced their listed capacity for the transmission. They even sent out a service bulletin on it. So their publications don't all say the same. You just fill them until it comes out the level plug anyway, so knowing the actual amount isn't that big a deal.
