do we need to have a dot number on our pickup truck and trailer to go into the state of iowa for an antique pull. Some people showing cattle a couple of years ago mentioned we were not too welcome.

As long as you are not making a profit on your tractor pulling you should never need a dot number. Keep your big winnings to yourself and if anything run stickers that say "not for hire".

Usdot numbers are free and only take a few minutes on the web to get. Always a controversy if you need them or not. In my opinion they are far less hassle than one stop by a motor carrier.

I would think that when you get a DOT#,then you will also have to get a med card & use a log book & get your truck & trailer inspected. But since this isn't a commercial enterprise & or no profits involved you should be exempt from it.
I know as I got caught hauling merchandise to a show & have gotten legal 3 yrs ago.
This is when your combined gross capacity weight is over 10,001 lbs.

Those DOT boys can say alot of bull, telling you what you need & blah, blah & maybe even give you a ticket because they'll say you need DOT # when you don't but just rember to say(I'm hauling my own stuff) and they should not bother yoyu ,NOW if he's havein a bad day or you have the wrong color of tractor he's gonna try anything he can to stick it to you,but try not to get nasty with him & don't say anymore than you have to & make sure you have your trailer brakes working & your load secure.

pulling my g-neck with MY tractors on it, i pass right by the ports, i don't even look in mirror to see if they were flashing the stop/come-in light...if/when patrol stops me, I'll polity say these are my own personal items going to a show...
