Draft Contol cutting grass

OK guys, I cut grass for the first time the other day with my new finishing mower. Never have owned a tractor until I bought this 9N. My question is, How can I keep the 3-pt hitch at the same depth? Every time I hit a small bump, the mower raises a little. By the time I make one pass, it is not even on the ground. To finish cutting I just held down on the lever. There has got to be a better way.
There is also a mechanical conpraption tided to the lever to help keep a box blade at a controlled depth. Should I disconnect this while cutting grass? Or is something not set quite right?
Please help,
Thanks

The easiest way to make a mower ride steadily on a 9n-2n is limiter chains, hooked from the pins on the lower link pins to where the upper link hooks to the tractor. This enables you to set the height of the implement.---lha

Brent:

It sounds like your 9N has been equipped with a so-called position control device. This device simulates the position control function provided on later model Fords and should hold your lift at a constant position.

That said, your finish mower no doubt has gauge wheels and is designed to follow the contours of the ground. If it has four gauge wheels, simply lower your touch control handle fully and allow the gauge wheels to control cutting height. If it has gauge wheels only at the rear, you will need to install limiter chain, as lha has suggested, to control the cutting height at the front of the mower.

I make a mechanicl contraption that is called the "Zane Thang" that will actually work and keep the mower at what ever height you want it to be.

Post a picture of the "contraption" you have. I'd like to see it.

See the link below.

I'll send you a picture of it if you will email me at [email protected].

ZANES LIFT STUFF

Most all new finishing mowers have wheels (4) one on each corner of the mower. I run mine with a 2N and lift quadrant low enough so all 4 wheels are constantly on the ground. If your mower has no front wheels Zanes position control is the best way to go. Once you have it it will extremely useful for other implements and applications too.

Sorry guys, I have been out of town all day.
OK, thanks for all your help. My mower does have 4 wheels. I will get pics of the mechanical contraption in the morning. I just walked in the door, baby is wanting bottle and put down for the night, wife is at work, and I need a shower.
The chains may be my best option. I push lever all the way down, but with the up pressure on the mower from bouncing slightly, it slowly works its way back up.

Here is a pic Zane. Not sure if it is one of your ideas or not, but it helps alot.

Tighten up the touch control lever and loosen up the friction block on the Zane Thang. I had the same problem. I run my finish mower with the lift arm all the way down. all the weight of the mower resting on its own wheels.

If you have the finish mower sitting down fully on it's four wheels, how do you adjust for height? What if you don't want a close shave.

The gauge wheels are adjustable. On mine, I just swap spacers on the gauge wheel shafts (think large casters) to adjust the cutting height.
