Draft control

Finally got to drive my tractor around last weekend. 51 8n 12v. Hooked up the Dearborn blade and ran it down the driveway for awhile. Hydraulic lift works great, takes hours for it to lower after shutting off with the heavy blade raised. Only problem is with the draft lever down the 3 pt won"t raise. Now I never tried it without any weight on it. I do plan to take the inspection cover off this weekend and see if it"s leaking from up above before I order any parts. Is the draft control out of adjustment? We do have the jig to adjust everything. Any input is welcome. Thanks

lets disect your post.

you said it holds hours when off.

yet later on you mention pulling a plate to look for leaks up top.

that don't sound right does it?

that's like saying your car starts and runs fine.. but you think it's out of gas and has a dead battery.

the 2 are mutually exclusive.

draft lever should be up for position control.

methinks you need a linkage adjustment... if you do that.. go ahead and service the cam pin...

if position control works good.. and you won't be using draft.. .. i think I'd leave it be...

You shouldn't need draft control for using a back blade to grade the driveway. Only use for draft control is a bottom plow. In draft mode the lift should only raise during the last two inches of travel on the control lever. You can move the quadrant backward or forward to adjust this. Also for draft control to work the big spring must be adjusted properly (most are rusted tight). If you don't need draft control and position control works, I would leave it alone.

well I figured if I had to take the top cover off anyhow to do some adjustments can't hurt to check it all out? I will be using the draft for working up food plots this spring. I wanted to get every thing working correct before it's hauled up to the cabin for the summer.

then you will want a top cover gasket, and the 3 small gaskets under the hyd cyl.

do the cam pin and the adjustments.. zane has a jig that I hear makes it pretty easy.

if your lift holds good.. sounds like piston, rings and relief are already up to snuff.

If you plan on "doing some adjustments" you really should get one of my lift adjusting jig fixtures so you will know where you are going with the adjustment. Using that information found in most all manuals will get you nowhere.

There is a way to fix the draft mechanism without having to go into the lift at all.

Take the draft spring yoke off the back of the big spring. Remove the three bolts that anchor the plate to the back of the lift housing. Find a 5/8" flat washer and grind a notch in it for the aligment dowel in the anchor plate so it will fit over it and make sure the washer is small enough outside diameter to fit into the hole in the lift housing. Put the anchorplate, spring and yoke back on and you should have draft working now.

You can adjust how far up the quadrant the lift begins to raise by moving the quadrant back or forward where it bolts to the lift housing with four bolts over elongated holes in the quadrant mount.

Best to get my jig with pictures and tricks I've learned over 60 years of experiance fixing Ns.

ZANES LIFT STUFF

Hi Zane:
I think I have the same problem. When in draft mode it does not lift. If you push down on the draft/position lever, That's push it a little lower then horizontal it will lift.
SO
Can I do the washer trick with mine of is it time to tear into it.

OH Yeah I did try adjusting the quadrent back and forth, that's how I got it to lift when pushing the draft/position lever down.

Thanks.
Bob
