Drag Harrow

Any one using Drag Harrow anymore? I have basically two - 2 section harrow and both were laying in the growing grass for years and almost destroyed pulling them out with a Skidsteer. They have seen hard use way before I got them. I have extra parts also in the junk pile and with effort could fix one or two up? Or would it be better to just scrap the whole bunch? I also have a couple 3-point harrows that don't get used. Seems the new Acerage owners prefer modern chain drags and other attachments for the compact tractors.

I have an 8' flex harrow that I drag behind my 8' IH #370 disk. I also use it behind an 8' IH model MF grain drill with grass seed box. I usually use a 454 IH tractor but I also have a 2400 IH and a 330 IH tractor. The disk was a 12' that had 6 broken blades, but I cut it down to 8' and had enough parts, without buying anything. The disks that were there were in great shape. I bought it at a farm sale for $135 in 1982. I paid $37.50 for the flex harrow, it is an IHC diamond spike tooth harrow....James

I plow disc and drag harrow 10 acres every year for a vegetable garden. So yes, I still use one. Sounds like mine is in the same shape as yours. Does the job so that's all that matters. Kind of wish it was a 3 point but i have 3 sections so its 15 ft.

I found a 3pt springtooth harrow and find it much more useful than the drag harrow. Takes the place of a disc too IF it is bare ground and not grass and weeds.

We have 2 old spring tooth drags. Both 12 foot and we used to use an evener as dad always called it to pull both at once with the Cat then plant with the H. We use one for the garden every year. Can pull it with whatever tractor is available at the time of use. I need top work on one of them or switch to the other. One needs a set of runner under it and the fron skid shoe added to. with no plow points around anymore I have to heat old chisel plow shovels and straighten to use. God forbid we would buy a strip of steel for the front skids. You would have to know dad.

I have an 8' S-tine 3pt cultivator. I haven't used a plow or disk to work garden for years, just the S-tine. Much easier to keep level. It has a rolling basket and small drag bar on the back. I use it to make seedbed before planting. I use the flex harrow behind it sometimes....James

When I was a kid we used four section harrow and went over all the planted ground a few times so it was perfectly smooth and clod free before planting. We could go in 3rd gear and make a dust storm. When I used to garden I used the two section and had trouble making the turns without it being on the back tire. I was having some good use repairing bare spots in water ways ect but then the "Operator" would come get out there and kill the new grass with Herbicide??? Garden got small and repairs small so now one section behind 4-wheeler works. Funny thing-In my Grandpas day he built a nice wood beam for a wide section Harrow and it all painted up and hanging on the shed wall since the 1950-60's. Big problem with no one wanting Drag harrows may be storing them between use and transporting between fields and with NO-Till anything goes on planting as long as it is Nothing???

I like drag implements made to make turns so that I can make my many turns in my pastures without having to lift the 3 pt every time I come to a corner.....wish I had one but haven't seen any around here for sale.

I still use a 16 ft. hydraulic lift IH 401 drag harrow on my hobby farm. Before most of my land was tiled, we had ditches with water ways. You could lift the harrow from the tractor when crossing them. Also, the hydraulic lift was useful to lift the harrow on the go should it clog with grass or sod lumps. Usually use it for the last tillage pass when planting wheat or oats. I think this harrow was made in the 1960s. I can still get runners and teeth from our local IH dealer. Al

For a time those things were real popular with the food plot and hobby folk. Brought good money (compared to other ‘old farm junk’) at the auctions.

I’d think that would still be true?

That's why I use a disc....grass and weeds and I find that if you disc with the plants still standing, rather than mowing first, you get better results.
