Draining Water Off Fuel Filter Question

I'm a newbie, as far as diesels engines go. All my tractors I've owned before have been gas. I now have a Ford 3000 dsl.

I know that the fuel system has to be primed after changing the fuel filter.
But what about just draining the water off? My manuals don't really say.

I'd do it while the engine is warm to avoid cold start problems... but basically, when it's shut off, open the drain on the bottom of the filter or water separator (or both), drain until you get clean fuel, then close the drain(s). Now open the bleeder on the top of the filter housing and bleed until you get clean fuel. Close the bleeder and start the engine. It should catch OK. If not, then proceed to bleed it normally, first at the filter, then the pump (rotary pump), then all three injectors.

I'm not disagreeing with Rod's advice,but I've never had to bleed the system on any of my FOrd diesels after draining water out of the filter or separator. The drain is on the bottom, water and/or fuel comes out, air goes into the tank through the vent on top... there shouldn't be any air getting into the system from draining off some moisture. Still not a bad idea to do it when the engine is warm, and start it back up after draining.

I've never had to bleed one after draining the water separator either... but I'd rather be prepared.
I suspect if it was left open for any length of time you probably would have to bleed it.
