drawer slides

I'm trying to refit a set of cabinets, site-built in 1968, with side-mount drawer slides. The mono-rail slides needed less clearance on the sides, so I have enlarged the openings to allow for side-mounts. I've refitted quite a few drawers in the past, but that was when there were still several old-style lumberyards in this area. The problem is, Lowe's and Home Depot don't sell the cheap, simple slides where the drawer can go straight into the channel for the roller. There is a latch on each side which keeps the drawer from overextending. The slides they sell have to be lowered into the roller channel, so the opening has to be taller, and I don't want to enlarge the opening to allow that. They do have full-extension slides, but they cost three times as much. Does anybody know who sells the old-style slides?

The drawer box is suppose to be an inch smaller in width than the opening. Do you have enough overhang on the drawer fronts to cut the opening that much bigger? A better solution depending on how the drawer box is made is to use undermount drawer slides. That way you wouldn't have to enlarge the opening. These are available at woodworkershardware.com

The full extension slides are worth the expense. With the monorail type hardware and some sidemount 3" to 4" of the back of the drawer stays in the cabinet when fully extended. With full extension slides the back of the drawer box comes out of the cabinet. At woodworkers hardware the prices are less than half home depot prices.
