Be careful with Jacobs, according to a machinist friend they aren't what they used to be and are now made in China. I recently needed a chuck for a half inch portable "arm breaker" drill and he suggested an Albrecht brand chuck from Spain. I got one and am very happy with it.

Just to be clear, that's not a Jacobs chuck. I'd wager it's a very cheap chuck that would be disappointing. Especially after it's been around a few years. A 5/8" Jacobs chuck would probably be a couple hundred dollars.

That JT3 is the size of the tapered hole in the back of the chuck. Your drill press uses that taper right?

Most drill chucks have threaded holes in their backs.

Albrecht chucks are one of the best. I put one on my mill now I want one on my drill press. They are expensive, but worth it. The money you save by not spinning and destroying drill bits will pay for it.

Buzz Saw's friend is right, Jacobs brand
chucks have gone downhill . . . really far
downhill.

Albrecht chucks are very good, but the
ones I've used were all made in Germany.
I've also liked the French-made LFA chucks
and a Spanish chuck that I've forgotten
the name of.

I've known a couple of people who have
been reasonably pleased with Chinese
chucks sold under something-or-another
Goose brand. Flying Goose, Goolden Goose,
something along those lines.

Will this one fit? I will be using it mostly for drilling wood blanks for my lathe. Doesnt need to be machinist grade, just drill holes for pen blanks, pepper mills etc. thanks,Chris

If your old chuck says 33 that chuck you show with the JT 33 for 34.95 should fit. It should be good enough to drill wood all day long.

That looks like the chuck that came on my Grizzly drill press. JUNK!! I replaced it with a Jacobs. Wish I would have bought a Albrecht.

I wanted to correct my earlier post, we talked about an Albrecht chuck, but for the cost vs quality decided on a Llambrich chuck which is made in Spain. Lesser cost and the quality is great. Probably no need for an Albrecht chuch on a portable drill. Sorry for any confusion.
