Drill Press Motor

Due to mouse activity I need a new motor for my drill press. It is a Cummins 9 speed. I have been looking on line and see several options. I know I can buy a new drill press almost as cheap as a new motor. Anyone have a brand of motor that has proven reliable or they really like? Thanks, Ellis

I bought a 1 hp motor for my drill press off ebay. They guarantee satisfaction. It works just fine but its not a multispeed, course I didn't need one as I have a v belt and pulleys that I can easily manipulate for the desired speed.

My son works in a shop that rebuilds motors. Just what is wrong in yours?

Check Market Place for used motors. You need one with a similar base to mount to your machine. Key is to find one that will run on 110v (assumed), same RPM, and shaft diameter to match your pulley. Most motors are reversable with changing a couple wires. Regarding quality of motor, nearly anything you find will be better than what was put on your drill press in the first place.

Baldor, Dayton, Marathon.

If the windings are damaged, most motor shops will recommend you scrap the motor and buy new. Rewinding a motor by hand is time consuming and labor intensive. When you're paying a $100+/hr shop rate, you can buy a pretty fancy new drill press for what it would cost to rewind the motor.

I replaced the motor on my drill-press so I could run a tap and back it out. If anyone needs a drill-press motor I'll take a closer look at it.

I took my old motor to a well known motor shop and that is exactly what they told me. Ellis

I put a 1hp 3phase motor wit a Varible Frequency Drive on my old Grizzly drill press. Fully reversible and speed control. Runs off of 240 volts, but you can get VFDs that run off 120 volts also.

Interesting that there is a 600T manual starter w/overload behind a pair of SP1D breakers feeding what is presumably the line side of a VFD, which should have its own current limiting and ramp parameters. That's belt, suspenders, AND velcro all in one pair of pants.
