Drill Press Suggestion

I've looked at the Jet 20 drill press for some time now. I really need a drill press until recently. Originally I was drawn to the 20 drill press because of the 1.5hp. I've found no other drill press at this price can match its HP rating. I want a gear driving auto feed Elis for 6k.
Any Suggestion??

for a grand or so, look at a used cincinnati bickford radial drill press. i bought one for 1200. its huge. mine weighs close to 7ooo lbs

Not sure I'm following all your question...

The Jet 20" is not auto feed.

Not sure why you would need 1 1/2 HP, but if you really will be needing that much power, and needing it on a regular basis, the Jet will not hold up.

Like glenster suggested, go with a used industrial rated, gear driven, heavy duty model.

I will also suggest used industrial drill press. Not sure where you are but in the rust belt there are bunches of them around at used machine tool dealers.

My drill press is in storage I found this one like this used cheap (no stand I had to build my own) till I can do better its worked out well. I have been able to mill, drill, bore try that with a drill press... Once you work on a adjustable table like on a mill you will never go back to a standard flat drill press table. It took me awhile to get use to clamping my work down once I got a handle on it all work is clamped down. I would like to have one with a square post.

I love having a milling machine. No reason to own a drill press.

There are cheaper drill presses that can do the same thing. Go on Amazon and read the reviews, not everyone is happy with this purchase. Do you need large diameter holes ? Why so much power? Reviews say the belt slips so extra power may be useless. Where does it say auto -feed ?

My $.02 is to get an old unit off Craiglist or Ebay. For $100 or a little more you can have something that will last your life time and better than anything you can buy today. I must have 10 drill presses. Delta, Atlas, Craftsman, and many more are readily available for cheap. The older they are the better. When I look at the new stuff today it looks cheap unless you are going to spend crazy money.

I buy mine at auctions, the older the better. Never paid more than $50 Just make sure the spindle isn't bent.

My son just bought a old milling machine at auction last summer, $500 Not hook up yet.

Thanks Hobo, i was wandering if the grizzly was a quality machine,but what would be a reasonable amount for tooling and bits? I could build the stand.

Remember you are buying machine tooling you would also need some indicators to do precision work. I got well over 1K in end mills with it along with the vice. I have added tooling and indicators as I go. Sky's the limit :wink: Someone that's more educated on a mill would be the one to ask. 50% of what I do is basic drilling pick a place and knock a hole in it... The more I have became accustom to it I use end mill bits the other 50% of the time its nice to mill a straight hole that's something you can not do with a drill bit. You can slot the holes and mill the work to your liking. You have to use your imagination you can about clamp anything to the table.

The table is were its at unlike most drill presses the table is adjustable clamp the work in it and move it around with the table. Its a mini man toy one day I will have a real man toy this has been a good toy to learn on...

My friend Jon use the drill press. He told me there is a plastic gear in the drive train and it gets stripped every other day. It is 10 dollar but sometimes it is not available and you have to wait until grizzly gets one.
