dropped sleeves

New to 8n, just got this one with a frozen motor.

The #4 exhaust valve was frozen open and the motor froze

the #1 and 4 cylinder sleeves stuck to the pistons and went down to hit the crankshaft. I was able to get them out

Does this happen? There isn't much of a lip to hold them in

the tractor was being worked on but the owner passed so i don't know what he was working on.
Is it possible to put-in the wrong sleeves?

Yes, sleeves can drop and tangle with the crank. Some hear a knock.
.040 sleeves came with early 8ns with a star shape preceding, and then following the serial number.
Ford changed the symbol to a diamond on later 8ns designating .090 thick sleeves.
.040 sleeves dont have much of a flange.
Blocks are .001" less than the sleeves, so they should not just drop in.
Many use modern sleeve retainer to "glue" if not enough interference.

Our 1948 8N dropped a sleeve a couple different times, didn't have a whole lot of money at the time so My Dad had Me fix it. I went to the local Ford dealer and they said to clean the bore of the block and the new sleeve and then paint it with Aluminum paint. It was a short term fix but this was the early '70's so the loc tite products weren't around yet. The fix was to bore the block for the .090 sleeves, did that when I was in vo tech and it's been fine ever since. Some of those old N's have rebuilt many times and I've seen some Old timers hone the bores slightly to get the new sleeves in. So who knows what may have been done over the years.

The original Loctite thread locking compound was invented in 1953. It was named Loctite in 1956 and the whole company was renamed Loctite in 1963. I went looking because I thought I remembered Loctite being around earlier than 1970.

 
The Loc tite products might have been available but I was a Highschool kid and had no idea. And apparently the local Dealership Mechanics didn't either. No Google around those days. All I know that was the only fix they offered and it got us by for a couple years.
 
I don't claim to be an 8N expert. But I understood that the factory sleeves could be knocked out, the surface honed and the stock pistons and rings from a 60 horse V8 run on the virgin block surface. This came from my old boss, a Ford tractor dealer, and a master mechanic.

Shure could, 0.80 or 0.83 oversize. Think TISCO sold them. In 70s, early 80s when came in for overhaul. Thin sleeves would just drop in. Sent to machine shop , had bored for thick sleeves, There maybe a few still out there with over size pistons.

V8 60 pistons are 2.600 inch diameter.

It was not till the 80's that I became aware of such a product. It started showing up on new cars and found its way into repair instructions. The older garage owners were not going to spend money on anything new as their mindset would not allow it. I don't remember seeing such a product on the shelf till the 80's.
 
Probably would be cause for a compression problem in a 3,188” bore. :oops: Must be remembering the wrong original host engine for the upsize pistons.
1948 Ford Mercury V8 .040 oversized pistons should slide right in. When they wear out bore it to .060, then .080 and next Install thick wall sleeves , going back to standard size pistons. This might get you to year 2120 .

Verify this before you buy anything as I believe it is incorrect. In the WWII time frame, Ford v8's were supplied with the thin wall (.040 wall) sleeves. There were several sources for pistons to fit the blocks after sleeves were removed. These pistons were advertised as 0.082 oversize. (0.040 wall thickness times 2). This gave a little displacement boost fot the hotrodders. Sleeves disappeared after the war, but the pistons remained available for a number of years afterwards. Isn't it amazing how Ford drew on currently produced parts to get the 9N from drawing board to production in less than a half year. A final tidbit. Mercury autos were introduced in 1939 with the 239 ci v8 (3-3/16 bore). Ford cars were supplied with 221 ci v8's ( 3-1/16 bore) until 1945 when they got the 239.
