Dump truck transmission question

I am supposed to be getting a new dump truck at work.it will have a Detroit dd13 gen 5 12.8 410 hp engine with a dt12-1650-ov vocation 12 speed p overdrive transmission.what does all that mean in English?

That's a 12 spd auto shift transmission for heavy duty work. Wish I had an auto shift, they are sweet.

I don't know anything about the Detroit engine, but most of the autoshift transmissions will out perform standard shift in most situations. A local guy has a fleet of Mack dump trucks and he claims the autoshift trucks consistently haul more loads per day. All other things are the same. The hard part for first timers s getting used to letting it do its thing, most think they are better than the transmission and in most cases that's not true. Took me a long time to quit reaching for the manual shift buttons.

Lol i am sure my left foot will hit the floor a few times looking for the clutch pedal for 1st,reverse and at lights.in a slow moving traffic jam I already know I wont miss the clutch pedal!

The DT12 is a standard transmission with auto shift built especially for heavy duty application like dump trucks and concrete trucks. It may not have the get up a go of a highway unit but it will stand up better in a off road situation.

I like a true automatic over a auto shift standard but that is mostly because of the way my company programs the trucks computers because we never get off the pavement.

I am driving a 6 speed full auto,I hope I never go back to a manual again. I run around 46,000 gross and mine is stop and go like a UPS driver. 8 MPG and my knee doesn't hurt.

12 speed overdrive automated manual transmission with a 410 detroit dd13.
I've never driven that combo but have driven the Macks with the 12 speed m-drive. The only upside I find with the m-drive is that is has a second usable reverse ratio that you can select and use vs too slow and too fast in the conventional road ranger... otherwise, as far as I'm concerned the thing sucks. It doesn't take that much ability to out drive it with a conventional 13. On hills it's constantly hunting for gears. You can put them in manual mode and force shifts or hold gears but honestly I find that more difficult stabbing at buttons in the dark than just... imagine this... put the damn thing in gear and it stays there. In any situation I much prefer a 9/10/13 road ranger. If I had to, then an allison for vocational work. These automated manuals are intended to introduce the steering wheel to someone who should never hold one...

I was looking at new dump trucks in 2021. I spotted one with the automated 18spd transmission. I was going to make quite a trip to look at and try it. I watched a Utube video of a guy with a 13spd automated transmission in a Peterbilt. After watching that video, I said no to that idea and bought a 21 Western Star with the 470 hp DD13 engine and an 8LL transmission, Very happy with it. This will be the last truck in my career of over 50 years of owning and driving trucks. DD13 a big change from a 671.
