E4A magneto

I have a 1928 10-20 and when I got it the mag was off it [ was told it did not have the correct mag on it and he had brought this E4A mag because it was original for the tractor, but never installed it], let me say first I know little about the E4A, I would like to know if I have the right one for this tractor before I spend any money on it, looking at a operators manual [ not sure if its the correct year manual ] show a piece on the mag [opposite end from the cap]they are calling starter pawl, both are E4A magnetos, but the one I have does not have the starter pawl, I see both kinds for sell, [hope starter pawl is correct name] hope I haven't confused everyone, would anyone know which one would be correct for 1928 10-20, with or without the starter pawl, or someway to find out? Thanks

Mike, the E4A would be the correct mag for that tractor. However, understand that IH offered other mags as well, not as a stock item, but as a dealer mod. Also, there was an F4 field upgrade available as well in later years when it came out.

So, if you want the tractor to be "stock" as it would have come from the dealer, the E4A would be correct.

One other thing I will need to check is when IHC went from the Dixie mag to the E4A. May take me a little time to dig out and research in the manuals. However, I stand behind the E4A being a correct mag for that 10-20. Cowman or Dwayne Hansford may know for sure off the top of their head when the Dixie was replaced with the E4A.

Mike,The e4a is the correct mag,if yours does not have the starter pawl im not sure when this style came out.I have a 1928 Farmall Regular that has the E4a with the pawl. The e4a is a good mag but costly to repair.

Mike,I am pretty sure the E-4A is what you want for a 1928 to be original, but if you want a safer mag to use the F-4 does not need to have the "impulse lever" reset every time it fires or tries to start or after it is run.If this is not done you may get your arm broken. Also just in case you're not familier with these old beast the timing advance on the back of the mag should be raised about half way to keep from getting kicked and don't spin start, quatert turn up only.rick

Ok sounds like the E4A is correct, so the only question is now if it should have the starter pawl, if yours is correct James sounds like it should have, since both are 1928, maybe someone else will be able to confirm that it should have the starter pawl also, thanks guys. Mike

We was writing at same time 16-30 oilpull, but very good advise, I will take any advise because I have never started one this old, I have been reading the manual, but nothing like experience, I do want to try and keep the original mag if I can. Thanks

I believe the late E4A had the automatic impulse. We have a 1931 Regular all original and it has E4A with manual impulse so, probably not many E4A's with the automatic as F4 came out shortly there after.

I will try and get a picture of what I have tomorrow, I know that would make it easier, [a picture worth a thousand words lol].

Duane is correct, IHC made an "clip on" automatic impulse for the E4A, and the early F4's had the same setup.

Picture of the later, automatic impulse:

Here is a picture of the manual impulse:

Ok Tom looks like I have the one with the auto impulse [ so is the impulse and starter pawl the same? ], that would not be correct for 1928, looks like I will be looking for one with the manual impulse, also the picture of carb and manifold can anyone say if it looks correct for 1928? Thanks

Mike, not so fast on the mag. Remember, IHC offered field upgrades. So, that mag is 100% IHC. That mag is 100% correct for the 10-20. However, that is NOT the mag it came from the factory with if it is a 1928............but that doesn't mean it wasn't upgraded later in life. The auto impulse was a nice upgrade. You have to decide, but I personally wouldn't sweat it too too much. Decide what you want to invest $$$ in. If that mag is working after you get the points cleaned up...........USE IT. You have other places to spend $$$ to make that tractor work.

My opinion. Others will chime in.

Yes, that manifold and carb is correct for 1928. Like Tom says, don't worry about the mag, use the one that is on the tractor! As a matter of fact, the auto impulse is a little handier as you don't have to manually flip down the catch every time you go to start the tractor!

You guys make a lot of good points, good to have access to all the knowledge on here, like I said this mag wasn't on the tractor, so I think I will check it and if its good I will go ahead and put it on, oh one more thing, anyone know if there are any type of shim that goes under the mag where it bolts down? why I ask I set it on there to see if I had what was need to couple it up and it look like it needed some type of shim under it to line the shaft up. Thanks
