Ear Worm 5/5

Thanks for posting. Good to hear something from such an influential music family. Not sure if most folks know but they were to be the cover story for Life Magazine in December of 1941. THey were very popular at the time as they had a show broadcast from a receiver on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande from Del Rio Texas. The station was so powerful it was heard almost everywhere in the USA. The bombing of Pearl Harbor knocked that story off and it never was published.

It was said if you stood next to a wire fence in some areas you could hear it--even some heard it throught the fillings in their teeth. That sounds like a tall Texas tale, but maybe so as TX would be close to the source.

Those high power stations were called clear channel stations. WLWS in Chicago and WLW in Cincinnati. Could tune in WLW on the airplanes ADF and listen to ball games 100s of miles away. Could also home in on them with that radio.

Clear channel were limited to 100000 watts. They were clear channel as after dark, all the day time stations dropped off and they were the only ones on that frequency. The border station was 300000 watts I think.
