My late brother was a chevy guy. I am trying to clean up some of his stuff. He had a lot of small block motor stuff. What I found was a chevy block that had four main bearing cap bolts. Any Chevy guys have an idea what chevy motor in the 60, to late 70's had four main bearing cap bolts? Also found roller lifters, that may have come from that motor. Sorry not tractor related. Stan

it sure was not any engine that was in a car or 1/2 ton, the heavy duty stuff was in the bigger trucks , which had 4 bolt mains and a roller timing chain. is this engine orange or blue ? no the rollers are not from that engine. dont worry, engine is an engine and makes more sense than a lot of stuff that is posted.

Two numbers to look at: The casting number at the back of the block like Terry describes, and the stamped engine VIN number on the flat pad just ahead of the right head. The stamped engine number will tell you almost exactly what you have. The casting number will get you close. If you can, also show us a picture of the flywheel end of the crankshaft. Each of the different catagories (327, 350, 302, 400) have different flywheel flanges on the crankshaft. The "gold standard" Z28 302 will have a round flange with just one notch in it. Red, some late 60's z 28 Camaro's had 4 Bolt 302's and 350's, maybe a 327 or two, and there may be a 4 bolt 400 passenger car out there somewhere.

We have a '79 Chevy C60 with a 350 4 bolt main that I overhauled in college engine rebuilding class. It also had roller lifters and what I thought was a heavier duty timing chain setup.

1969 was the first year of the 4 bolt mains, they were used is high performance and heavy duty engine blocks, not all pickups got 4 bolt mains, plenty of them were 2 bolt.. All small blocks got upgraded in 1969, stronger webbing cast in the lower part of block, all blocks got the added strength but all were not 4 bolt blocks. The 350 was the first 4 bolt main sbc, 327 was never a 4 bolt block but you could make one. 1987 was the first year for roller cams/lifters, but the pickups didn't see them until 1995.

Casting number and vin number will tell you what it started life as but only precision measurements can tell you exactly what it is today. There's never been an engine with more modifications done to them than a SBC. Four bolt mains is a good foundation for performance.

Then if he was setting it up for racing they would sometimes put roller lifters in even though they didn't come in them from factory. also if it has been bored over size all bets are off for what it is other than the original stock block size. And guys around here put 4 bolt mains in a lot of cars when they were using them for racing. I always though if it needed more than 2 bolts to hold the mains on the block and bolts were not big enough for the job. Chrysler just usde 2 1/2 inch bolts with no main problems even in the trucks. Maybe some of the old engines before my time would have had 4 bolts but that is doubtful since I was around old Dodge and Chrysler engines from the 50's to the late 70's. The same engines were in things from the 40's till they changed them somewhere in the 60's. Yes the hemi's and some of the v-8s would have been a bit different back then maybe. Never thought much of Generous motors engines either.
