early B pistons

I'm confused by ads for pistons and rings.

Am I missing something? It seems they sell oversized pistons for B's but only over serial #201000.

But I do see oversized rings for older models...

Is the idea to use oversized rings on the standard sized piston on the older ones? Or are these just to fit oversized pistons that are no longer available?

Look at Riley tractor parts. They make m&w style to fit 4.5" bore block in .45,.90 and .125. You can also look up a local dealer on their site.

What year tractor are you looking for pistons and what size?

It's a 43b - so the 4.5" pistons.

But - I've only run my finger in the cylinders to feel for wear. Have not measured yet. To me it feels ready to go up a size.

And I know the original owner has replaced rings a few times. But I won't do anything till I mic it.

If I do bore it, I'll only do the minimum amount needed.

But if I came across a cheap set of oversized pistons that might be a little larger than needed, I'd bore to that size to save money.

Oversized pistons for the unstyled and early styled have been NLA for many many years now.
Rings were usually still available.

With the amount of reproduction parts increasing all the time they may now be available somewhere.

For my 1945 I lucked out and found some NOS .045 over gas only pistons. This really wakes them up !
For years many have been boreing the 4.5 out to the 4 11/16 of the late B with good luck. Your block could get thin though or hit a sand/rust hole ?

Well Riley lists them... of course, doesn't mean they actually HAVE them. But we'll see.

Not going to start making calls till I measure and find out what I'm going to need.

Good to know on the larger 4 11/16 pistons - was wondering if that was a possibility, even if a last resort.

As previously stated by MikeM, the stock gasoline 4-11/16 pistons work just fine. Want some real snort? Use the model 50 LP pistons along with premium fuel.
Something that is usually forgotten is the camshaft and followers.
You can bet after 66+ years the cam and followers are worn. Lift and duration are lost. The engine can never really operate correctly.
It's dirt cheap to send a cam and followers out to be freshened up.

plan on spending about $400. i have a 41 b. i lucked out as well. i surf ebay daily. found a set of original m&w .045 over pistons for $150 a few years back. That same week i came across a set of .090 cast pistons that look new. Those are coatged with a protectant and put aside ffor future use. I got those for $51 on ebay. its all about timing and patience!

update - riley doesn't really make these pistons any more.

I guess they own the machinery to make them, but for some reason stopped production.
