Early JD2640 PTO

Neighbor bought a used 2640 a couple years ago and never used the PTO until now. It spins, but if you put a load under it it slips.
I dont know any thing about a 2640, is there a way to identify if it has an engine driven or independent PTO?
No it does not have a reverser

Thanks

If it has Independent PTO, it'l have a small yellow PTO engagement lever between the two gearshifts. Make sure this little lever ia ALL the way up or the PTO will slip under load.

Be sure pto lever(key 1) by operators left heel when seated is in fully forward position. And if tractor is equipped with IPTO be sure as
wolfman stated that lever between gearshift levers is fully engaged. If tractor has IPTO then next thing to do is check pto cutch pressure which
should be about 155 psi.

It has the yellow PTO handle. I advised him to make sue that it is all the way up.

What is the purpose of having two PTO Levers? The one on the side is a physical disconnect, is the yellow handle used to supply pressure the actual PTO clutch?

When using the PTO, what is the proper use of the 2 handles? Engage / disengage with the yellow handle or the lever on the left side?

Thanks

IIRC IPTO has both handles. I guess JD engineers just didn't see need to remove it. If that lever is present as I think it is it can stay forward all the time.

My 2030 has that set up. i always move the side lever out when nothing is on the PTO, just another way to be sure it doesn't turn if the hydraulic clutch (yellow lever) drags and the brake slips.

So by disengaging the PTO with the lever on the left side of the tractor it will allow the PTO to free spin as the clutch/brake is in front of the Mechanical disconnect.

Yes the hydraulic clutch and brake are ahead of the mechanical disconnect. On the 2030 if you disengage the mechanical lever by your left heel, the PTO shaft (output) doesn't spin even if the hydraulic clutch is engaged. I expect your 2640 will be the same. If the mechanical lever is engaged the PTO shaft will turn if the PTO brake doesn't hold and the hydraulic clutch drags any. The PTO brake is supposed to be on when the hydraulic clutch is disengaged. It is important to idle down with high inertia equipment before disengaging the hydraulic PTO to reduce load on the brake.
