Easy starting 8n ain't

My normally easy starting '51 6-volt 8n has suddenly become-hard starting. It seems to start easier cold rather than hot, but once started it runs great. I think part of the problem is the original starter bendix as it sometimes pops out quickly. I've checked the gas flow through the carburetor (pulled bottom bolt)and it's a steady stream so I suspect something electrical. The plugs are pretty sooty but dry. Plugs and points are gapped at .025. While checking for plug spark using a 3/16" gap test plug I noticed the spark is jumping to the wall of the test plug and is not bright blue but orange. I also checked the spark at the points and it also is orange. Is it just time for new points and plugs, or are there other possible issues?

Thanks

Well, yes & no.

If the tractor was running ok, it would start w/ the OEM bendix. As soon as it needs a tune-up, that's what happens. The new positive drive bendix will allow the engine to reach a higher RPM before it kicks out, but you will still have a poorly tuned tractor.

You've got a weak spark. Do a tune-up (points, plugs, condenser, points & set the timing) That should fix it. And make sure you use quality parts. Get your parts here, at NAPA, from nnalert's, nnalert Tractor or Dennis Carpenter. All are reputable sources.

Tune-ups are a good thing. Don't forget to "tune-up" the wiring. Your weak spark could just be total resistance increased by lots of corroded connections. Start with the battery cables, both ends of both cables, then go to the small wires.
Take each connection loose and use a small file to shine the area each ring terminal makes contact with. Shine both sides of the ring terminals, and if the nuts look rusty, get new shiny zinc-plated hardware. I bought an assortment of the small sizes and have no trouble matching them up. Finally, replace the ignition switch.

I"m no expert by far, but I thinks I see yer problem. I noticed that you said both yer points and yer plugs are gapped at .025. I believe that the points are to be gapped at .015. maybe worth a try!

Do not listen to Mr. D's advice. The sidemount's points gap at .025. The front mount is .015 . If you have a 51 you have a sidemount.

Check the coil leads. The + side should go to the distributor on a positive ground system. Point gap should be .025 on a side mount distributor, .015 on front mounts. Check the point gap at several locations to be sure the shaft is not bent or the bushings worn out.

Thanks for all replys. Got new plugs and points today. Gonna find a shady spot this afternoon and replace them.

Thanks again,

John T
