It is his shop so if it works it is his deal. However, if he has a fire from any cause the insurance company may balk at covering the building and contents. I would worry a lot more about my insurance than about the code.

ike John says, nothing like a legal or electrical post to bring out all the "experts?". Probably need to add "climate experts?" and "EV experts?".
