electrical nightmare

hello again,
well i bought the right regulator with four connections. hooked them up best i could and started the engine. i have a mh 50 with a continental engine. the ignition uses a key, then you push the button to start. it also has a transmission safety switch and a separate starting solenoid. after i started it the voltage read 16v. so i shut it off. the next day went to start it and it wouldn't start so i put the charger on it. still didn't start. i looked around the regulator and saw three or four wires weree either melted or completely burned off. because the last regulator had no markings i didn't know where a couple of wires were supposed
to go. someone sent me a schematic of a massey charging system but it was for a diesel. my repair manual has no schematics at all. if anyone has a schemaic for the charging system please e mail it to me. i replaced the toasted wires but don't dare hook up anything more than the gen and f on the regulator.
thanks
