1951 - 8n sidemount dist 12 volt - how do i find out if the generator is getting a charge back to the battery. i have a volt meter and ifi hook it up to the battery backwards it shows12+volts,while running. shut it off and it shows 12+ volts. its a new battery. amp meter does not workhow do i check the system

f your generator was working,you would get about 13+v.the best way to test without getting too expensive is to get an ampmeter or inexpensive charge tester[harbor freight has one for cheap].I have one of these cheap testers even though Ihave ampmeter,volt meters,battery load tester&lots of other stuff,it is handier to use.---lha

The first thing we need to confirm is if you really do have a generator (as you said) or if it's an alternator, as are most 12v conversions. If it is indeed a generator, is it wired positive or negative ground? (hint: look at the battery cables)The next thing we need to make sure you understand is to never disconnect the battery from the system while the tractor is running regardless of a generator or alternator. And, lastly, the tractor came w/ an ammeter on the dash. Is it working? If so, what is it reading?

The volt meter will show if your genny is doing her job.

Place the volt meter on the battery leads - it should read about 12.3 ~ 12.5 volts ......do not unhook anything.

then start the tractor, it should rise to about 14.3 or so volts. If it rises at all, your genny is working, if it drops a little or stays the same then......genny is not doing her job. Increase the gas to see if it make a difference too.

you never unload a charging device like a genny or alternator by removing the battery.

Just to emphasize SouNdguy's point here is the voltage you can get out of an alternator when disconnected from a battery and run at speed with full field and a resistive load of 10 amps on it. Just in case you can't decipher it that is about 120 volts!

I think it is the [b:f5f4e3fa7c]backwards [/b:f5f4e3fa7c]that really makes my blood thin.

But then you got 12v, and genny's and voltage meters......

thanks i will use your info and if i dont get aread on the genny, could it be the voltage regulator
