Electrical resistor questions Serial #'s

I am also going through the electrical on the 9N, My question is, the original resistor has been "disconnected" a ceramic resistor is being used, and I have a new 12 volt coil on order. If I remember correctly, when using a 12 volt system with a 12 volt coil you use the original resitor?? are there other options? I was also wodering if it is common to have an engine block minus serial #'s? I know on the Model A's if the dealer replace the engine he would restamp the block, does this hold true with the 9N? I've removed most of the paint and can't so much as find a single #!

Recent explanation to me by Dell...
Tom.........I can't exactly answer yer coil question. The early 12-volt coils 1997? were "touted" as being 12-volt coils and it became very evident within about 6-mos that they were MELTING because the 12-volt alternators were pumping out 14.7 volts and OVER CURRENT the internal coil resistance. They started inculding a little piece of toilet paper that said to add a 0.47-ohm resistor to LIMIT the coil current. ONLY electornic engineers like me, know how and where to get 0.47-ohm resistors. NOT from TRACTOR stores or autoparts stores; Industrial Electronic stores. I devised my "trick resistor" from generally available RatShak resistors. Two 1.0-ohm 10-watt resistors in parallel turn into 0.5-ohm 20-watt resistor. Its the LAW! And the difference between 0.47-ohm and 0.5-ohm is???? not much.

So do you have the early 12-volt coil (about 3.5-ohms) that need my "trick resistor" or do you have the later 12-volt coil (about 2.5-ohms) that needs the OEM "infamous ballast resistor". I haven't gotta clue. You will haffta ohm-meter it yerself. BTW The OEM 6-volt coil is about 1.2-ohms. Exact values need LAB grade test meters. Close'enuff is good'enuff.

I hope I answered your questions..........respectfully, Dell (WA)

I just ordered the new 12 volt coil about 3 weeks ago, UPS lost it so the parts store has reshipped my entire order, I leave for "up North" wednesday night, hopefully UPS will come through this time!!! according to the tracking # it has been out for delivery for the last 7 days! So to answer your question, I assume it will be the "new" 12 volt coil.

Thanks,
Tim
