Electrical system upgrades.

Hi Everyone,
I have a couple of older tractors. Most of the time I have no issue with generators. But there can be times when they are problematic. And it seems like a lot of alternators require sheet metal modifications to be properly fit.
Recently while scouring around online I came across an company advertising replacement alternator units. These units look like and mount the same as the generators. I came across them searching out a replacement for my Moline 335 but I have other equipment that would like to upgrade as well.

Has anyone had any experience with units like this and can they give any recommendation either on suppliers or instillation ideas? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I see no reason why they would not work, but are pricy, A poster here did his own, and it looked very good.

You can get smaller alternators.

The alternators that have been made to look like generators would be fine. Tyey bare (to me) very pricey. If dead stock look id desired, that may be it. ALternators from Mid 80s Nissan Pickups. Hitachi 14231 are much smaller, and do fit with only bracket changes. they wire like a 3 wire Delco 10SI, with the S terminal hoooked to the Bat (output) terminal with a 6 inch wire, and the L terminal hooked through a diode to a 12v source that ois on when running. If you NEED an alternator disguised as a generator, and have deep pockets, well and good, have at it.

I you just need a SMALL physical profile alternator, look at ebay caution # 223164491928, a tiny little Denso-style that puts out 35 Amps, and fits EASILY anywhere a conventional old tractor generator will, for under $40 shipped.

If NOT an ebay fan, GOOGLE some of the interchange numbers listed for other sources.

The OEM version comes as standard equipment on some 'Bota diesels.

Just curious but do you know if the old wide pulley's will fit these?

The little Denso 35 amp alternators with one-wire hook-up are used all over the place. Only 4" in diameter.

Its your money and your choice to spend big bucks for a looks like a generator alternator OR one of the small Denso one wire 35 amp 4 inch alternators as mentioned below. $51.33 free shipping.

Sure they look funny and the correct police may ban you, tell them to kiss your grits. Other option spend bucks to have your original genny restored??

On the same subject, there are also now low-priced permanent-magnet alternators/generators. $50-$60, tiny, and rated 14 amps. Price is kind of amazing since not long ago - Delco 10SIs were being converted to permanent magnet and selling at times for near $200.

So just in case someone needed a really tiny alternator with no field-current power needed, here it is.

14 amps is plenty for many small tractors if mainly just for battery charging and maybe a few lights once in awhile.

One drawback is the belt pulley on these little units. I do not know if a wide-groove pulley is available.

After some searching I finally found my original info. Then I realized I had some brain fade during my original conversation yesterday(being in the hospital and on pain meds probably didn't help. lol). What I had actually come across were 6 volt alternators configured to look like old long and short Delco-Remy generators. These units are the product Powermaster Performance. Even though the units are a little costly the idea of a bolt on or almost bolt on replacement with the added improvement of being a modern alternator just struck a note with me. I am curious if any one has used any of there units and what kind of success they have had with them?
