electronic ignition h

I had an electronic ignition put in h . Now after about ten minutes it quits. Then after thirty minutes it starts and runs for ten minutes again. It does have an external resistor. The coil feels hot when it quits.

if the resistor is in series with the ignition key, to the coil input terminal, and the resistor is near 2.5 ohms or so, it should be correct. if wired differently, or the resistor is also extremely hot, the coil may be bad. They do make bad ones. it should be only warm if that after 10 min. Jim

Coils normally get hot after a time but NOT so hot you cant keep your hand on them. The elec switch or old set of points just shuts coil current on and off so that shouldn't affect coil voltage. If before it was a 12 volt tractor and a 6 volt coil plus a series voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor, the elec switch shouldn't have affected coil temperature. Now if you changed coils we need more info!!!!!!! Some of the high energy after market coils still use ballast even if its called a 12 volt coil!!!!!!! Did Pertronix match a new coil to your switch ??? Is it a new or old coil and same ballast or what???

It can happen that once a coil warms up you can get HV breakdown failure and after she cools she works again.

Best I have given the info you furnished
