I've been rebuilding a JD no. 9 mower. The sickle bar I replaced has the 1 1/2 section on the end.The new one doesn't.I noticed the farm store sells this section.Do they do a better job of cutting and help eliminate clogging on the end??Phil

Yes I believe that they do a better job of cutting and help eliminate clogging on the end of the cutter bar and the outer shoe.

Be sure to check the ledger plate on the outer shoe.

The knife on each mower we use has an end section.

Completely rebuilt the JD 39N 7' knife with all new sections and added an end section.

Put an end section on the new 9' knife for the JD 350 mower.

Put a new end section on the 7' knife on the #5 mower.

Bought two new 7' knives yesterday; one for "Ben Franklin" a #5 mower and one for "Nelson" a 350 mower.

Will put an end section on each of these knives.

Hope this helps.

My experience on a JD 350 (360?) is that yes they do reduce end plugging, cut some better. I have them on all of my sickles.

I cut all my hay last last year with a No9 and because the grass was tall I got by with out the extra 1/2 sickle on the end because the long grass kept dragging itself clear. This year due to less rain the grass in the pastures is much shorter and the No9 kept plugging the end to the point that I was getting off to clear every pass. Put the end sickle on prior to moving to the next pasture and have had ZERO plugs since. I have a No38 that I'm fixing up and I won't even try to cut before I put on one. I saw James used rivets; I was lazy and used the bolts.

Thanks for the replies.
I bought this mower because the No. 5 was so hard to put on and take off my old JD 430 tractor I use to mow with. I hope to go to a drum mower next year unless this mower works as good as it looks like. Now if it will quit raining every other day I'll start cutting.
